Beginning with the nineteenth century Realism of Gauguin, Ingres, and others, the numerous authors in this collection seek to find the role of the artist as a self-reflexive presence in the western art historical tradition. Though little photography is dealt with specifically, the developing modern tradition is explored fully, touching upon Hans Bellmer, Cindy Sherman, Man Ray, and Bill Henson, among others.
