Camera Portraits: Photographs from the National Portrait Gallery, 1839-1989

This interesting study of the photographic portrait is simultaneously a history of the photographic medium, and of the uses of photography to document class structure in England. Each page presents a single portrait, printed in color to faithfully reproduce to the integrity of the original, and a brief description of the sitter or the photographer. Early portraits range from David Octavius Hill's "Sir David Brewster" (c. 1845) to David Bailey's "Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales" (1988).
