Gilbert and George depicted a hostile, stressful, alien Spitalfields of the
late 1970s in their radical series ‘Dirty Words Pictures’. All 26 of the
photograph-pictures have been brought together here for the first time.
Anxious and dispossessed individuals combine with a careful selection of
local graffiti and subdued portraits of the artist duo. Introductions by
curator Lisa G. Corrin and Michael Bracewell discuss the work in
retrospect, pointing out the contemporary influence this significant series
has had on young British artists.
