For all its attention as a rogue state in the Middle East, the urban landscape of Syria remains somewhat of a mystery. André Mérian visited the country in 2006-7 and documented a variety of places and spaces with a particular, well-balanced eye towards the inherent tension between nature, its transformation and subsequent development into urban space. The twenty colour photographs are presented one full image per page, and introduced by a short text in French by Bernard Millet.
