But over the years, he was haunted by his early memory of life in Germany, and his knowledge of what befell his fellow Jews and other victims of the Nazis. In this stark and compelling book, Hartmann captures the concentration camps as they are today--silent, vacant, and deteriorating. The brutal irony of the book is that in spite of the inactivity and obsolescence of the camps as they are shown here, terms such as "ethnic cleansing" are still very much alive today.
