Rock poet Patti Smith was one of Robert Mapplethorpe's first models, and a close friend. When he died of AIDS in 1989, she began writing these poems to express her sadness and loss. The Coral Sea combines Smith's poems and narrative vignettes with Mapplethorpe's photographs to create a portrait of the artist as known by his friend.
