Candida Höfer: In Portugal

Portugal’s monasteries and churches, universities and libraries, palaces and opera houses recall the small country’s history as the leading sea and colonial power. Candida Höfer’s pictures, as usual devoid of people, invoke Portugal’s past glories, complemented by an essay by Portuguese 1998 Nobel Prize winning author José Saramago.
