Camera Portraits: Photographs from the National Portrait Gallery, London, 1839-1989

This fascinating study of the photographic portrait is simultaneously a history of the photographic medium and of the way photography has been used to document the British class structure. Each page presents a single portrait, printed in color to faithfully reproduce the original, and a brief description of the sitter or the photographer. Portraits range from David Octavius Hill's "Sir David Brewster" (c.1845) to David Bailey's "Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales" (1988).
