Carlos Carvalho is the director of FestFoto of Porto Alegre (FestFotoPoA) International Festival of Photography, one of the three most important festivals of photography in Brazil. With a mission to provide career development and opportunities for emerging, under-served, and under-recognized voices in the photographic arts, FestFotoPoA offers solo and group exhibitions, workshops, portfolio reviews, portfolio publication in FestFoto Web Magazine, and regional fellowship awards.
Carvalho currently serves as Vice President of a Brazilian network that aggregates curators, researchers, photography festival directors, and professionals related to cultural events of all photography media.
Carvalho has reviewed at the FotoFest Meeting Place, in Houston/USA, Encuentros Abiertos de Buenos Aires/ Argentina; Paris Photo, Paris, France; Jornadas de Montevideo/Uruguay; PhotoVisa, Krasnodar/Russia; PhotoLucida, Portland, Oregon/USA; Kaunas Photo Festival, Kaunas, Lithuania; Forum Latino Americano de Fotografia, São Paulo, Brazil, PhotoFestival in Lodz/Poland.
Recent curatorial projects include Brazilian Contemporary Photography, an exhibition in conjunction within the Latin American heritage programming at Atlanta Celebrates Photography and "Borders: Views Ahead"About Brazil and Uruguai Contemporary Photography, in Fortaleza, Ceará/Brazil.
He contributes articles to LensCulture, and he is the Editor of OF Magazine, an online publication committed to expanding the visibility of Brazilian and Latin American photography.
