Despoina Penny Demertzi studied photography under the photographer Stratos Kalafatis. She has also attended seminars at Stereosis Photography, Thessaloniki, Greece. She was a selected participant for Atelier’s Smedsby (Paris, France, 2016/17) one year photography workshop under the photographers JH Engstrom and Margot Wallard and she has also attended the photography workshop given by the photographer Anders Petersen at Alma Löv Museum of Unexp. Art, Smedsby, Sweden (July 2016). She was a selected participant for the Book Editing Photo Workshop with Christian Caujolle (Atelier Smedsby, Paris, 24-28 October 2016) and for the photography workshop with Antoine d’ Agata (Void, Athens, 03 -08 March 2017). Her photographic study “Hestia” was selected by FUAM (The Photography Application and Research Center, FUAM founded within Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Faculty of Photography) and Alex Bocchetto and Valentina Abenavoli AKINA BOOKS for the Workshop: “THE PHOTOBOOK PROCESS: from Idea to maquette to marketing”, FUAM PHOTOBOOK WORKSHOP#6, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Istanbul, Turkey, 23-29 January 2017.
Despoina – Penny Demertzi is a committed interdisciplinary artist / researcher, she expresses herself and her work through Synaesthesia and SAAR (Artistic Research Social Applied) and she communicates herself via Photography, Visual Art / Research, Soundscapes and Performance. She is interested in the dialogue between Art and Everyday life, Human and Social Anatomy, Aesthetics and Politics.
D.Penny Demertzi holds a BA in Archaeology and History, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece 2006) and an MA in Fine Arts – Honors, MaHKU, Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art and Design, Utrecht, The Netherlands, 2010. On September 2016 she has been selected for the PHD program of Goldsmiths University, Department of Politics, London UK. She has also attended the educational program for Diploma in Translation of The Institute of Linguists of London at Metaphrasis, Thessaloniki, Greece and she has studied Folk Dance at the Cultural Department of Alexandroupolis, Greece (1985-96). She is a Qualified Teacher both in Greece and United Kingdom (QTS Holder).
She was awarded with Darmasiswa Scholarship (by Indonesian Government via Dutch Embassy) and studied at ISI –Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Department of Performance Art, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2012-13). She collaborated with Ruang Rupa Artist’s Initiative (Jakarta based) on two projects related to Jakarta’s Urban Mobility and Transaction, on Counter – Mapping and Sexual Education as The Anthropology of the Image (2012-13).
Despoina Penny Demertzi was invited as a guest Lecturer at Tarumanagara University (UNTAR), Jakarta and at ISI, Surakarta – Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Departments of Visual Art/Design, Interior Design, Fine Arts, Indonesia, 2013.
She was the Artist in Residence at Ruang Mes56 – Indonesian Contemporary Photography, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, 2013-14. Her exhibition is entitled: “Theatrical Scenario Yogyakarta – Jakarta, Java, Indonesia: IN BETWEEN (chapter 02): Anthropomorphism, Addiction, Antisepticism and Productive Line”, Ruang Mes56, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
Her photographic study is entitled: “Theatrical Scenario Yogyakarta – Jakarta, Java, Indonesia: IN BETWEEN (chapter 03): MAGICIENS DE LA TERRE?
Despoina Penny Demertzi has lived and worked in between Greece, The Netherlands, Indonesia and United Kingdom.
She currently lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.
