Emily Shapiro was raised in rural Washington State. Her older sister, Jenny Riffle, is a photographer and introduced her to the world of fine art photography. She's been a subject in her sister's work since childhood, and equates her interest in portraiture to the fact that she grew up witnessing it from the other side of the lens. After earning a degree in Written Arts from Bard College, Emily moved to California and began working in media. Her writing is published or forthcoming in LSTW, A Story Most Queer, The LAMBDA Literary Review, and Foglifter. She's particularly interested in art that addresses gender, queer communities, and girlhood.
