About Floriana Avellino

Floriana Avellino is a contemporary photographer based in Milan. The common thread throughout her work, transcending photographic genres, is the investigation of reality through the lens of "the beyond" and a dreamy, suspended atmosphere. For Avellino, photography is a powerful tool to convey a worldview that is a tension "towards", and an overcoming of, preconceived ideas, imposed orders, and fixed data. Photography questions the objectivity of perception and becomes a suggestion, a fascinating meeting point between dream and reality. Liminal physical and temporal spaces—those "in-between" places, suspended, which precisely because of their indeterminacy are full of possibilities and devoid of rigidity—often form the context from which the Avellino's projects emerge. "The beyond" is also present in her interpretation of identity, viewed not as something innate but as the result of continuous historical, cultural, and social constructions, and by its very nature susceptible to de- and reconstruction. Even details and minimalism, often applied to the architectural field, become symbol and suggestion, an abstraction of reality and a potential for reflection, transforming into a visual synecdoche: the part that tells the whole, or more precisely, the part as a tension towards the whole
