About Gary Barat

Early Education: As a young man in the late 1960’s, Gary Barat worked with the legendary photography agent, Henrietta Brackman, who represented pioneering Life Magazine photo journalists W. Eugene Smith and Pete Turner, both of whom became Mr. Barat’s early mentors. Barat took workshops and classes with Danny Lyons and Bruce Davidson.

The Barat Foundation: In 1997, with his wife, Chandri, Mr. Barat co-founded the Barat Foundation, an educational corporation dedicated to expanding creative opportunities for under-served youth, where he serves as Creative Director. Mr. Barat’s programs include “Adventures in Seeing”, a photo course developed to engage at-risk youth through photography, and his program of “Creative Recovery”, based on his own life experience, to help those in recovery reconnect with their inner self and society.
