I was a 20 year old living in India when I witnessed something that led to an on-going and life-shaping interest in mental health. When a fellow Westerner began acting strangely, an American doctor quickly diagnosed a psychotic break. Tibetan and Indian witnesses came to very different conclusions about her mental state and how to treat it. Since then, I have been fascinated with cultural constructs of mental health and the question of who decides what is healthy or sane, and what is not.

Before turning to photography at the age of 40, I worked as a clinical social worker, a writer and editor. My photography is driven by my interest in people and their stories -- particularly in the stories and lives of those who haven't the voice or means to be heard on their own, and those who exist on the fringes of what is considered "normal.”

I live in Berkeley, California, with my husband and teenage children and works as a freelance photographer.
