About Peter Udo Maurer

Peter Udo Maurer was born in Giessen, West Germany in 1952. From the age of three he lived in socialistic East Germany. For his thirteenth birthday he received a 6 x 6 camera and from there onwards he has been continuously fascinated with photography and capturing moments of life. While living behind the Iron Curtain he developed a strong desire for freedom and this dominated his life philosophy, thinking and started expressing it in public opinion. At the age of twenty he was sentenced to eleven months in prison for expressing anti-government sentiment. In 1978 he immigrated back to the West and became a free lance writer and photojournalist. 1984 “Deutsches Institut für publizistische Bildungsarbeit” in Hagen. Thereafter he spent one year in Mexico and Guatemala. In 1987 he travelled overland from Germany through Africa to South Africa.Here he lived till 2012.
