IDENTITY, An intimate view of dancers in the Pacific Northwest and how identity is reflected through movement.
IDENTITY is an ongoing photographic project that focuses on capturing the signature style of an individual dancer. It is not about the traditional or perfect pose but a closer look on how a dancer moves revealing the key elements that form their identity.
Every artist, no matter the medium, has a signature style that sets them apart from others… a certain brush stroke, a unique use of color, a way of capturing light. This signature style is present in performing artists as well, just as it is for photographers. IDENTITY, as a project, seeks to first show the signature style of individual dancers in the Pacific Northwest. As the project grows I hope to reveal a Northwest style that ties these artists together… a dance accent if you will, that runs through most dancers like a common thread and sets them apart from dancers in other major cities.
As I explore the identities of others through their unique movements I am also exploring and revealing my own unique identity as a photographer. In the long term this journey will try to answer enduring questions about style and identity for artists in the Northwest, how we relate to each other and how we define ourselves.
