Festival of Santa Catarina de Bombadilla, Antigua, Guatemala

During the festival of Santa Catarina de Bombadilla, a grand procession departs from Santa Catarina, winds through the historical center of Antigua, then returns to its point of origin. Devotees carry "andas" -- large altars upon which religious statues are placed. In spite of the festive atmosphere, the parade is a somber affair. Participants walk in silence, heads bowed in reverence or prayer.
