Beyond the Surface is an ongoing exploration of the Scottish coast that creates an impression of our coastal environment reflecting the power of the ocean and its potential destructive nature.
The first phase concentrated on documenting the abandoned tidal bathing pools around the Fife coast and capturing the transitory nature of the landscape, its structures and its impact on those who visit it. The outdoor tidal bathing pools were an integral part of life around the coast; many villages had their own pool. No longer maintained by local councils, the bathing pools have fallen into disrepair.
I’m now developing this project to focus more on the mutable nature of our coastal world by creating cyanotypes in the pools that capture the physicality and power of the sea. By using the wet cyanotype process, it is possible to interact with the environment in a very physical way to record abstract and unpredictable impressions of nature and the watery world of our coastline. Each image is unique and specific to the moment and place in which it is made.
