Sarah Vandermark has been taking photographs of family and surroundings since she first used a camera as a teenager. Her amateur photography seeks to document and find meaning in domestic, middle class, everyday life. Use of natural light and candid compositions, often of her two children, typify her work. Her images are emotive, moody and often toy with her son’s gender ambiguity and the dream-like state of her aspie daughter.
Recent tuition from Carla Caulson has seen a shift towards curated shoots and story telling. Artistic influence can be found in the work of Sally Mann, Vee Speers and Bill Henson.
Sarah Vandermark was born and resides in Canberra, Australia. She attended night classes at art school while a science undergraduate at the Australian National University. Photography provided a conduit to creativity and joy while she was otherwise employed.
