Seeking Wisdom draws on Buddhist principles in an attempt to stimulate a dialogue about the complex interplay of factors that influence our decision making process while drawing attention to the important role wisdom (enlightenment) plays in successfully navigating through the challenges we face in our lives.
Traditionally, in most “modern” societies, beginning in early childhood, an individual is labeled “intelligent” if he or she is a master at memorizing “facts”. Then, gradually, as one moves through the educational system and beyond, we tend to recognize and reward individuals who are able to synthesize information and formulate reasonable solutions, i.e. the problem solver. However, we should not be complacent just because we may be respected and viewed as “smart” by others.
In my opinion, achieving wisdom (enlightenment) is a much more important goal. In order to achieve greater wisdom, one must think more clearly and objectively, unburdened by misplaced attitudes, egos and bias. By approaching life with more clarity, one has a greater probability of performing acts of compassion that benefit society while simultaneously maintaining one’s own inward peace, equilibrium and growth.
