‘Glare phenomenon’ – when the beams of a car’s headlights collide with those from oncoming cars, the pedestrians disappear from the driver’s view.
When I was at the driving school to take a driver’s license, there was an explanation about this phenomenon. The tutor said that drivers must exercise extra caution particularly at night and in the rain when this phenomenon tends to occur.
This prompted me to wonder: When the headlight beams collide, might some lost souls possibly reappear?
Rainy alleyways, highways at night, curves of the bayside road. Enveloped in the light of the high beams, I pressed the shutter button with the hope that the camera, often believed to ‘steal one’s soul’, would capture something.
A desire to be aware of the unseen or attempting to believe in the presence of souls may be a far-fetched prayer, however, I feel that by living with such assumptions, it keeps me alert for the miracles of living in the present moment.
In my view, no matter how digital evolves in the future, ‘prayers’ for humans are accomplished in an extremely analog way. I’ll keep trying to point my camera into overlapping lights and keep praying for the invisible soul to appear.
