Face As Canvas

My portfolio is my way of owning the narrative of my life. As a photographer, my latest artistic element has become my face. My series "Face as Canvas", demonstrates my love and respect for face painting and using my face as a voice for expression. Indigenous cultures around our globe use face painting as a part of their rituals and traditions. I have created self-portraits emphasizing this art form. Using a macro lens allows me to see and speak through natural lines, wrinkles, the shape of my features and most of all the color of my skin. Others may find aging to be frightening, where as I consider it to be glorious. Using my face as a tool for art encourages me to always be brave. I have also included portraits of family members wearing Kente cloth. These images will lead to a new series called America. Kente cloth is my symbol of being an American. I have use Kente cloth to describe and connect each portrait to me and my country. Kente cloth came from fabric woven in Africa. The cotton printed design we use today is made in America as a remembrance of cultural roots. In every photograph, I want to engage my audience with drama, fun and a sense of a spectacular presence.
