Upon my return from China back in January 2008, I borrowed $150 from my best friend to take a Greyhound to pay a visit to my old man. I been going down South to see him since I was 9 years old, but at 21, this was the first time I really tried to get a portrait of him, document some of his reality. It has been a very difficult relationship. In hindsight, I think it was about healing and understanding, I was in a photography course at the time and my professor suggested I use the road to capture my America again. I went back the next year, during another course of hers, and finished this story. I left out the color photographs I took from those two five-day trips, although I feel they still fit. I have since joined the U.S. Navy, and do not really talk to my father. We threw a couple roofs together back in 2011 and 2013, things did not go well and I have not seen him since. The 2008-2009 series shown here, were the best visits I had with him.
