This photographic essay, entitled Study for a memory - vol I, is comprised of a text and a series of images. An occult subject is present in the text in short sentences, and insists on repeating the word "remember". The language used shows the circular aspect of the narrative. Like a litany, descriptions of everyday situations struggle to build memories.
Concerning the visual realm, the family album is re-possessed by the re-shooting of kept images. Epoch documents of solid support and a black and white density and matte paper, these images are “provoked” so as to lose their rigidity through interference and manual distortions. In the author’s gesture, the edges and surfaces “dissolve”. The image is diluted like a memory that appears to be liquid; and the traces left over transgress the sense of origin of that photography that freezes a certain moment. The remaining traces are: its composition, the gestures and lights that activate a split collective memory / built / shared within the culture. The individual legacy dissolves.
This fluidity is broken by solid-looking images, with defined focus and clear contours. At the world’s threshold, where imagination and reality are mixed together, scenes emerge that create tension in the visual space and reaffirm fictions. The landscape becomes volume, proportion, thickness and depth. And on this journey, the subject wanders, slides down, moves like a nomad, without a defined route or point of arrival.
Between the word and the image, the author proposes an abstract and emotional journey through the geography of memory. In both the word and the image, landscapes emerge that move in a disorderly temporality.
Imagination builds the sense of time and duration from the sum of these moments: single, multiple, tragic in the sense of the individual death of every instant, in the disconnection existing between each one of them.
The instant contained in the yesterday, in today, and in the now, is what we just remembered and we just forgot. It is in what we create.
