For my project titled “Characters”, I investigated eclectic groups of people characterized by heterogeneous personalities in some of the major Italian cities like Florence, Milan and Venice.
This work allowed me to make a social criticism about a world which is continuously changing. As time passes, since individual achievement is gaining more and more importance in the modern society, we are losing our sense of self as human beings, and this will trigger a process of self-improvement driven by others.
This will lead people to conform fully to current social expectations, making the authentic moments of our lives unnecessary and producing a general emotional detachment.
In this project, I looked for a direct approach with the subjects in order to be able to show their real personalities that otherwise would be left undisclosed.
In all these social groups, I found some people with low profiles who, thanks to particular situations or personal qualities, are able to carve out their own roles in my project.
This is the reason why I chose the name “Characters”: because I could prove that authentic moments that make us humans are not completely lost.
