Chromogenesis

An exploration of a non light based approach to image making with chromogenic colour photographic materials. My work joins the long standing dialogue that explores photography about photography, and raises thoughts and questions around the thingness of photographic materials . I take a meta approach that uses the intrinsic processes of photography alone to make what might be describes as photographs although could equally be seen as paintings. I am ‘practicing photography [painting] by other means’ (Richter), playing with the boundaries of the ‘photographic’ with the aim of transmutation. Stripping away the ‘Apparatus’ of the camera and the mediation of light, and thus stepping out of the arena of the technical image, I am exploring a range of gestures with which to reveal the phenomenological potential of photographic materials.
