The purpose of this series was to highlight the graphic appearance and the sensation of strength that these impressive mountains of Nordic countries may inspire. These impassive giants are the witnesses of the geological times and the forces of nature at work for millennia or millions of years. Contrasting with the immediacy that characterizes our modern western way of life, these mountains - carved by erosion, the power of plate tectonics and all these great past upheavals - are there to put us back in our little human condition in the course of the great and long history of the Earth.
All the pictures were taken in Iceland, northern Norway and in the Arctic landscapes of the Svalbard archipelago. The use of black and white was obvious to me for the sense of timelessness I wanted to express with this series.
