In BLOOM, the scientific term for a gathering of jellyfish (medusa), I have isolated jellyfish from the environment* to make photograms on light sensitive paper. Unlike a photographic image but very much in the tradition of scientific cataloguing, these photograms are closer to an imprint, or trace, signaling aspects of touch and authenticity due to the required presence of the object in the process of creation.
*No live jellyfish were harmed in these projects
Jellyfish are shape-shifters, undergoing a number of transformations in their life cycle. Their rapidly growing numbers are indicative of changes in the world’s oceans.
Recent research has shown that the coating of some species of jellyfish is able to bind nanoparticles and plastic micro-globules which, once in workable form, could effectively combat certain types of water pollution.
