The design of the Ayios Andreas Municipal Hospital was conceived by Danish architect Theophil Hansen, bat was only partially executed. The cornerstone was laid by King Otto in 1857 in the upper town on a site in the southwest part of the fortress.
All citizens of Patras treaded were treated free of charge at the hospital.
In the hospital ’small operating theatre, many pioneering operations were performed by T. Zaimis, head of the surgical department between 1887 and 1902.
In the early 1970s, the hospital moved to a new location and the building complex remained empty. Up until 1993 a number of significant interior features remained in their original state.
