I walk and photograph a lot around Asakusa, a working class district on the river in east Tokyo and long home to craftspeople, temples, a brothel area and theatres. Generally I use a panorama camera or a standard 35mm film camera. This series was photographed on a film camera I bought cheaply in the neighbourhood. I tried to make the most of not knowing how well the camera worked, and I found I shot more freely than usual, leaving more to chance. I hope the result conveys some of the other-worldly and somewhat down-at-heel yet resilient atmosphere of the neighbourhood.
