Making Home

What can a living space say about those who inhabit it? How do household objects manifest as mementos of past and present landscapes? Making Home consists of portraits in the homes of immigrants living in Sydney. A home is a material and functional space. Simultaneously, ‘home’ as a concept represents societal norms and ideals of comfort, belonging, security, and family. Making Home considers what it looks and feels like to establish a corner of comfort in a society where many immigrants are made to feel they don’t belong. Each portrait has been composed in consultation with the subjects who wrote their own titles for the works. The series explores the domestic environment as a site where personality is performed and interior worlds portrayed.
