This is a small selection of photographs from an ongoing project which document the Brokpa people of eastern Bhutan. The Brokpa inhabit the villages of Merak and Skating, situated high up in the himalayas. They live a semi nomadic existence surviving solely on their yak and sheep and have been totally isolated from the modern world. They have ethnic ties to Tibet and are believed to have migrated to Bhutan a few centuries ago from the Tshona region of Southern Tibet. The Brokpas have maintained many of their unique traditions and customs, however, this may be about to change with the construction of the first road to Merak. Will the Brokpas be able to maintain their unique culture and reliance on their yak whilst also reaping the benefits of modernisation and improved living standards.
