Due to the increased rainfalls in recent years, the Nyabugogo river, that run along a few meter from the houses along Route National 1 in Kigali, posed a grave danger of flooding. Sometimes these floods caused deaths and the destructions of homes. The Government decided to raze all the houses of this poor neighborhood. Some of the inhabitants who lost their homes and commercial activities were relocated to the only model village in Kigali, that is receiving residents of other areas prone to flooding as and that are being razed as well, but most of them had to find an accommodation by themselves and at their expenses relying on their very limited means. After the destruction the inhabitants tried to recover whatever they could from the rubble extracting bricks and pieces of iron to resell. But they had to rush before the passing of the excavator that would completely destroy what remained, making any recovery effort much more difficult.
