New Yorkers In Manhattan Streets '82-'83
Project info

When I came to New York in 1967, to live in railroad flat in Hell's Kitchen I had a camera, a Konica similar to a Rollieflex. I had used it during my travels when I lived in Paris for a year in1965 in a $3 a night hotel on the Isle Saint Louis. Paris was like that then. In a way, so was Hells Kitchen, Where I still live. But I wanted a cheap apartment in order to have the time to photograph. I really didn't have a clue. So I went out into the streets to look for ordinary people just doing whatever they did every day, not thinking of it as a project. I'm still doing just that. These black & white pictures were made in the early '80s with a Diana camera
