AKIBARE (Japanese: A sunny Autumn day) is the first installment of a series of digitally published botanical photo-novels called "flora japonica". The scrolling format is reminiscent of the illustrated Japanese handscrolls (emakimono) that are considered as the ancestors of manga.
The story features the members of the BEJ, a Tokyo-based old-school research center working on a photographic survey of local plants.
With a mix of landscape/plant photography, performance and geekery, this project turns the image-making process into fiction, and gives a glimpse into the BEJ's working culture and ethics, or the lack thereof.
Here is a selection of images from AKIBARE. For the full story, please visit the dedicated page accessible from the "flora japonica" page of my website.
