Mississippi Portrait Series

These portraits are part of a larger series of photographs taken in 1971 and 1972 in Mississippi. Some of the people and places I knew only for a few hours; others I had known all my life. My intention was to document a rural life that I saw disappearing around me. Nearly fifty years on, that life has indeed disappeared. In the past year I have scanned the negatives and made digital prints, that these people who took me into their lives might be remembered.
