These portraits are my attempt to see into the hearts of people I have known all of my life. They reveal some of what I knew and much that I did not.
They were begun last year when I was diagnosed with a potentially fatal heart condition. Despite the fact that it is free, Cuban health care is substandard, largely due to the Embargo that restricts access to modern medicines and modalities. Even so, I hope to live for many years and continue to create work by which I will be remembered.
