Before I switched to digital photography in 2001 I worked almost exclusively in black & white. One reason being that in the years I studied photography black & white was considered the standard of serious photography, especially in Europe (in the US things started changing in the '70 with the work of Stephen Shore and William Eggleston, amongst others). The other reason being that it was way easier to organize a black and white darkroom than a colour darkroom at home. With the transition to digital photography, the ease to 'develop' images on the computer, and the newspapers and magazines I worked for opting for colour work, I rolled into colour photography without much thought.
The last months or so I have spent a lot of thought on colour versus black & white, and I finally came to the conclusion that the colour itself has to add something to the photo in order to justify working in colour. If not, I'd prefer black & white, giving more room to composition, atmosphere and drama. In this collections I'll gather shots I converted to black & white. This collection will grow as soon as the corona lockdown comes to a hold and we are permitted to roam the streets again, in search of new black & white moments.
