Resilience, a day shelter in Montreal, Canada, opened its doors to the homeless at the end of November, 2019. I volunteer in the kitchen and serve lunch to clients who are homeless or on social assistance. Clients help out by washing dishes and it wasn’t long before we were sharing stories about our lives.
Then in early March the Covid-19 pandemic entered our lives. Inside the shelter physical distancing was impossible. Resilience closed its doors to clients and we began serving meals in tents set up in a park across the street.
I began bringing cooked food from home along with my camera. Because the regulars have come to know me, and because I have befriended many of them I am able to take photos that are not posed or artificial. This world was new to me, now I have come to see how the world we share in Cabot Square deserves to be documented so others can see the vibrancy, the pleasure, and the pain.
