My current project, “I am Cuba,” looks at lifestyle differences caused by the "changing of the guards" in Cuba, over the last few years.
Raul, 84, took the reins from ailing older brother Fidel Castro in 2006 and was formally proclaimed president in 2008. He succeeded his sibling as First Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party in 2011.
Regarding the reforms he is counting on to modernize Cuba's socialist economic model, Raul Castro said the pace of change will be determined by consensus, "without haste, much less improvisations that will lead only to failure".
Cuba is gradually undergoing a process of change.
I wanted to find how those changes are reflected in the daily life of Cubans everywhere.
To track the effect of American tourism on cuban culture over a periods of a few years, and to find out if there are any signs of less poverty, or a higher standard of living or a more Westernized lifestyle, and how Cubans feel about this apparent new era.
I started work on the project about 4 years ago, I travelled to and explored some of the countryside, as well as cities such as Santa Lucia, Don Lino and Havana. As well as Santiago De Cuba, and I just got back from Trinidad.
I was touched by what I experienced so far. Both the simplicity and poor life style of communities and in contrast the sense of pride and joy for their land, was apparent during my visit.
So far i got the sense that although there is a mild change, for example, some Cuban manage to open more of a privet business, as hostel, and other tourist type of jobs raised, Still, the poverty is apparent to the naked eye.
