I use the camera and glass to explore the transient phenomena of light and color. The concept of the project Transparency is the transformation of the photographic surface. I capture images of light and glass as a refracting and manipulating tool. I layer the images digitally superimposing the frames until I create something new.
I am seduced by the emotional effect of light and color, and harnessing light with glass is my way to achieve a synthesis of these elements. Many artists have worked with the vividness and simplicity of color to invoke moods, much like the work of Mark Rothko, whose paintings are a strong influence for my overall oeuvre. Along with painterly influences, Minor White's photography and writings have been pivotal in grounding my work along with expanding my search for my own voice and projects. White said, 'Let the Subject find you. When you approach it you will feel resonance.' His writings helped me to continue building a relationship and more depth in my exploration of the subject.
When I photograph light, I believe I am guided by intuition towards deeper and aesthetically resonant projects. The process of my art has evolved over the years. Many years ago, I was photographing nature close-up, ensconced in sunlight; then, I have been creating calm reductive spaces with allusions to the land and sea with gradual progression to abstraction; and more recently, delved fully into the non-representational with a continued concentration in the exploration of color, light, texture, and space. I create environments with an uncensored mind at work, decoding layers of the elemental, and witnessing messages, thoughts, and feelings as they arise. My goal is to transport the viewer from their analytical self to their primary self, where they experience movement from observer to participant.
