The People Speak: The Art of Resistance

The People Speak: is my personal and ongoing project carried on in London since 2016 (since the start of my journey as a photographer) and motivated by what I considered to be the history changing events unfolding in front of me. Coming from an oppressed background, where hatred and racism were experienced on a ‘daily’ basics, and it was considered to be somehow ‘normal’; I was moved and inspired by people’s responses to those events. I could feel the spirit of the1970’s freedom revolution in the air, and it made me realise how the issues pressing at that time are still relevant today. I felt like it was a call to action to me - I already had my camera and this seemed to be the purpose. Since then, I was capturing people’s emotions and reactions to those situations in the streets of London. As a photographer, I’ve always tried to depict people with dignity and grace, and keep in balance both observation and participation, giving the audience the option to choose how they want to experience the depicted events, from the outside or the inside. How to speak with courage? Resisting, organising, marching, protesting and expressing themselves: The People Speak is a tribute and an attempt to document the voices of those who are fighting for a better tomorrow. Transmitting messages of equality, justice, love and hope… “I don’t want to take part in the world in the same way that I see it causing a lot of suffering to people. I want to take part in the world in such a way that it creates more happiness, more kindness, more thoughtfulness, more care.”
