Back in the days of analog photography I loved spending time in the darkroom processing film and making prints. It was such a wonderfully tactile experience. The advent of the digital age allows one to do so much more, technically, but I have discovered that I now far more enjoy the process of taking photographs then everything that comes afterwards. As a result I have terabytes of photographs that have yet to see the light of day.
When I first studied photography, if one had to talk about ones’ image that image was considered a failure (and God help anyone who actually used text in a photograph). Once I began to submit my work into competition I quickly learned that being able to write well about ones’ work is an important part of the process. Writing does not come easily to me.
Last but not least there is my predilection for series and sequences when I make images. Early on I noticed a fascination with the ephemeral impact of time on whatever subject I was photographing. Much as I admire “The Decisive Moment” approach to photography, in practice I am just as interested in the moments that occur before and afterwards.
All of these factors combined led me to begin the “My Moments and Memories” project. Each series of photos is attached to an essay, an essay too long to submit into this competition. I have attempted to summarize each essay into a sentence or two which I have included. My ambition is to create about 40 or 50 such combinations and then perhaps self-publish the resulting work. Attached is a selection of the results thus far.
