What does art look like? Perhaps it is an unfair question since the look of an artwork can be infinitely various, yet we are able to distinguish a work of art from everyday ordinary stuff. This project attempts to answer the question by presenting photographs of commonplace subjects that have the look of art about them, photographed as if they truly are works of art. We all make more-or-less educated decisions about the art we like, and in this case the decisions about artlike subjects are mine, based on my experience of looking at, thinking about, and photographing artworks and my preference for formally coherent, enigmatic works with a jocular twist. These photographs sustain my interest as they transition from records of particular subjects to artworks in their own right. It is a gradual process that begins when the subject is selected, continues when it is photographed, when it is processed, when it is printed, when it is published, exhibited and discussed.
