When photographing a person, I don't try to capture or reveal any "story" or biography or any preconceived "character" of that person. But rather, I seek a connection with this person, where we simply concentrate about being present in the moment. I don't want the person to "do" anything, besides being aware and connecting. I may also ask the person not to smile to me. I like that boldness that then can happen and be seen. In this way, I find I get portraits revealing general human characteristics, that are true and alive in this very person at that very moment.
