The word photography comes from the Greek photo = light + graphos = writing. Writing with light is one of the oldest definitions of this form of artistic expression.
Chemigrams are images created through chemical manipulation on black-and-white photographic paper. Using the most basic principle of photography - light that modifies the photosensitive matter - it is possible to create images by alternating substances that reveal and fix the photographic paper.
This project aims to question what we mean by photographic image.
All the images presented here were created by manipulating the chemical characteristics of black and white silver gelatin photographic paper.
By using the brushstroke gesture, typically linked to painting, I want to explore the limits we give to photography.
To question what defines a photograph.
Its content?
If the image is created by the action of light on the photographic paper, is it enough to call it photography?
I want to lead the viewer to question the usual definitions that restrict photography. And also think about which is the role that the photographic mattter plays in creating a photograph.
