In a densly populated city like Singapore, with very limited space for housing, going vertical is the obvious option. The result are numerous high rise buildings, at times reaching 30 floors or more, in close promixity to each other, forming housing estates and clusters throughout the island state.
In my series Vertical Island, I explore the visual qualities of these buildings, resulting in images of strong colors and abstract shapes, seemingly extending into infinity. Looking across from a vantage point, your eyes wander over endless rows of windows, staircases and roofs, occassionally stopped by a silhouette behind a window, laundry hanging off a window ledge or a tiny bit of greenery one might have forgotten long ago.
