When The Sun Breaks Out, The Fire Is All We Are is a project made within the natural surroundings of Los Angeles. From a temple frequented by Elvis that holds some of Ghandi’s ashes, to the canyons and communities once home to sixties counterculture, and the remains of a fire scorched ashram established by Alice Coltrane; the revered jazz harpist and widow of John Coltrane. These places on the periphery of LA’s urban sprawl somehow stand at odds but also reflect the cities strange dualities; it’s obsession with celebrity and wealth but also the allure of mysticism and spirituality; both cliched and profound. That these places are found in an increasingly threatened and turbulent natural world speaks to a broader issue of our tenuous relationship with being; seeking sanctuary in fragiles spaces. Through these places the dualities of LA are used as a sort of stage to explore the search for meaning in an increasingly uncertain time.
