I have always found black and white photography anachronistic and limiting. Yet when I found out about this competition I decided to give it a chance. I was surprised to discover that even when working with a colourful subject such as poppies taking the colour away does not reduce the impact of the image. If anything, it opens the eyes to new tones and textures which would otherwise have been muted. It brought individuality to the flowers, almost as if they had names which only now can be heard.
