Reflections

My project began as an attempt to look at everyday human-made objects that we often pass by because they do not attract attention. For a long time I have been interested in how we see and fail to see the ordinary. I would like my photographs to jar people into questioning what they are pictures of, what they mean, and especially to ask how they did not notice these things before. My project became focused on “reflections” as a way to arouse the viewer’s interest and puzzlement. We often try to “look through” a reflection to the object that is presented in it (in a mirror, for example), or to what is behind the reflection (say in the case of a reflection in a glass window or storefront). I want to make people pay attention to reflections in their own right as images with their own power or which add content and complexity to unreflected (or “direct”) images.
